I still have a few available seats for my Winter Lecture Series. The first lecture, Painting Really Large in a Really Small Studio, takes place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, 3 PM. I’ve made single lecture tickets available (see below) and anyone signing up for the whole series can bring a guest for half price.

This series of 3 studio lectures was conceived as a mix of art history, practical methodology, anecdote and speculation. The initial lecture in the series focuses on a work-in-progress, ‘Plaza Guemes’. The subject is a public square in the Palermo Viejo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. I believe big paintings should explore big ideas, and so a good part of the lecture will be devoted to exploring the paintings from the past that inspired Plaza Guemes, including this one by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Other influences include specific paintings by Ford Maddox Brown, Paul Cadmus, John Singer Sargent, and others.

The series is being billed as lecture/demos, and each one will have examples of hands-on work or a demonstration of the logistics of painting. The three lectures were also conceived as an integrated set, with ideas and histories that dovetail from one lecture to the next, e.g. the history of plein air, in the second lecture, is intimately entwined with the history of Realism explored in the third.

You could say that the lectures have been 50 years in the making. They draw from my long experience as a painter and student of art history, and ultimately I hope to bring that personal lifetime engagement to bear on questions of art’s role in binding culture and community over vast reaches of geography and time. Robert Henri, the great American painter and teacher said that “art is the way men speak to each other across the centuries.” I believe that this conversation, in an age of ephemeral pleasures and enthusiasms, is more important than ever.

Each lecture will be approximately 2 hours, with a brief intermission (refreshments included.) There will be a wine reception after the presentation. The lecture consists of a Keynote slideshow presentation and live painting demo, and will mix art historical information, practical painting technique and personal anecdote, followed by a short Q & A period.

The lectures were scheduled late in the afternoon, so that those traveling some distance can spend time enjoying the quaint antique shops and riverfront park of Snohomish before attending the event.

You can find more information on all three lectures, and purchase tickets, by clicking on the button below.
